Lab can't rise from laying position
Q: My just turned 15 year, 74 pound female lab suddenly was not able to rise from a laying position and had trouble maintaining position when urinating. she had been on 50 mg deramax for general stiffness. the vet recopmmended steroid medication at 20mg 2x day for 5 days. i am concerned that weight gain and frequent urination side effects will exacerbate her condition. doing research, i see deramax recommended dose is 1.8 mg/pound, so she was severly underdosed. i also see deramax is indicated for orthopedic surgery pain, which she did not have. i also see there are several nsaids that are indictaded for joint problems, arthritis etc. i have decided to increase the deramax befgore going to the steroid, but do you recommend another nsaid?
A: I actually prefer this one. |dont increase drug dosages on your own without checking with vet who knows your dog. i also would add supplements like super joint enhancer from 1800petmeds to food as well as prozyme and brite coat xs as source of omega 3 fatty acids. also consider proanthocyanidins from health food store at dose of 50 mg twice daily as well as vitamin e at dose of 400iu daily and vitamin c in form of ester c at dose of 1000 mg twice daily. no steroids. see different vet

My chow chow's eye
Q: Once i was washing my 6 mo. old chow chow he got soap in his left eye but it was tear free so i didn't think it would bother him. after he got out he started closing his eye and leaving the other one open. when he gets excited he opens it but other times he walks around like that. he get greenish-yellow discharge from it and his eyes stay wet. i put water in his eye and it works little by little. he still paws at his eye though. this has been going on for about 2 days. i can't tell if he's blind or not. i'm thinking to give him eye drops but i don't have any for dogs so is human eye drops suitable?
A: No. you need vet visit to assess eye and proper medication. see article on this website on eye care on education part of site for additional suggestions

Q: My bulldog has t cell lymphoma and we found out about 3 months ago. we tried chemo twice but she got so sick after the second trement that we had to stop. she is on cyclophosphamide 50mg ever other day and prednisone 20 mg one daily. but she has a tumor on her back leg the size of a silver dollar that is whitest green and really smells. and she has got sores all over her body some look like new tumors some don't. she still is eating good and seems to be happy is there any thing that i can do for her? and what can i do for the tumor that smells bad. it is to big to remove the vet said. she's my baby and i need to help her. she has them on her face and keeps rubbing it until it bleeds. thanks eileen

Cat mange
Q: Is it possible for cats to have mange? my cat seems to be losing weight and has sores on its body.
A: Cats do get mange although not as common as in dogs. allergies and autoimmune skin problems are much more common. your cat needs exam and workup by vet to sort out possible causes
